The client: Lakeland Trails is another well-established outdoor business based right on my doorstep in the Lake District. I was thrilled to be asked to work with them as I’m a keen runner and part of their target market. The Lakeland Trails are some of the most inspiring trail running and walking events in the UK. Designed for all ages and abilities, the trail courses range from 5km, 10km and 14km -18km, all the way through to half and full marathon distances.
The brief: To produce a set of graphically strong and commercially desirable t-shirts, hoodies and headwear for a well-established running series. Combining striking graphics with eye-catching but wearable colour palettes, I designed merchandise for each event in their 2017 programme of running events.
Taking design for print principles and applying them to clothing is a rewarding challenge – particularly when you get to wear the end result yourself. The designs had to communicate: the established branding (while also moving it on a step); the inspirational nature of the landscape in which the Trails are held; and the physical endeavour of the walkers and runners involved at each distance.
The series had to be cohesive but maintain a clear difference for each individual event too. And it had to work on different styles of clothing, from headgear to hoodies. Bold and confident, the linear graphics brought all of those requirements together in a way that was appealing to every runner – no matter of their age or gender. The versatility of the design and each of its elements means it can easily be applied to print materials and websites if required too.
